From The Booth
Actress and screenwriter Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha) has been building to her directorial debut for some time and it shows with the success of Lady Bird. The semi-autobiographical story centres around Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson, an outspoken teen yearning to step beyond the constraints of her Catholic high school in the sleepy town of Sacremento. Ms Gerwig directs her own script with delightful performances by Saoirse Ronan (in the title role), Laurie Metcalf and Tracy Letts (as her parents) and rising young film stars Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) and Timothee Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name). Lady Bird opened to an impressive 100% positive response on the Tomatometer, which included such critical raves as, “Lady Bird is something truly special: a coming-of-age comedy so funny, perceptive, and truthful that it makes most other films about adolescence look like little more than lessons in cliché.”—AA Dowd, AV Club. And, “Lady Bird is often screamingly funny but it also has a generous spirit, embracing characters with all their flaws and foibles, virtues and defects.”—Allan Hunter, Screen Int’l. What’s left to say but Most Highly Recommended.
