From The Booth

The latest film from Oscar-winning director Alexander Payne (Sideways, Election, About Schmidt, The Descendants) was first runner-up for the Peoples' Choice Award at TIFF 2023 and has started the award season with three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture, Best Lead Actor (Paul Giamatti) and Best Supporting Actress (Da'Vine Joy Randolph).

Professor Hunham (Paul Giamatti) is an academic who takes his work seriously, often at the expense of his own popularity with students and fellow staff. His gruff and unbending demeanor win Prof Hunham the task of remaining at the school throughout the Xmas break, to essentially babysit the handful of students with no homes to return to for the holidays. Being an elite boarding school, Prof Hunham's charges are entitled children used to a life of privilege, who resent any boundaries placed on their perceived freedoms. Thus begins the tug of war for the hearts and minds of all involved, where supposed foes might actually become allies. Endowed with a sometimes droll but very witty script, performed with underplayed exactitude, The Holdovers is Highly Recommended.

"The Holdovers is a film about class and race, grief and resentment, opportunity and entitlement. It’s that rare exception to the oft-heard complaint that 'they don’t make ’em like they used to.'" - Peter Debruge, Variety.

"The Holdovers is proof that we need more thoughtful, studied, loving, and irresistible human stories on screen."
- Barry Levitt, Slashfilm.
