From The Booth

Inspired by the incredible true story of composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. The illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, Bologne (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) rises to improbable heights in French society as a celebrated violinist-composer and fencer, complete with an ill-fated love affair and a falling out with Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton) and her court.

"This film, is part of a larger movement to recognize Bologne’s contributions both to French society and to Europe’s glittering classical musical canon. Director Stephen Williams, well abetted by a superb craft team of cinematographer Jess Hall, production designer Karen Murphy, and notably, costume designer Oliver García — whose glorious textiles underscore the vulgarity of pre-Revolutionary French aristocracy — dazzle with every frame." - Kim Hughes, Original Cin

"Harrison’s powerful performance and the chance to learn about this extraordinary artist make Chevalier more than worthwhile." - Christy Lemire, Roger Ebert.com
