Strange Birds: A Field Guide to Ruffling Feathers

By Celia C. PÉRez

In the store

Four very different girls form a group and want people to stop killing birds for fashion. This book is for someone who likes to read fiction mixed with non-fiction, teamwork, a bit of suspense and most importantly: BIRDS! I would give this book 4 stars out of 5. - Juliette, 9

Stargazing

By Jen Wang

In the store

Christine and Moon are both Chinese American. They are good friends who enjoy painting their nails and listening to music. Moon thinks that she is from outer space, and thinks she has friends from outer space. Moon has to go the hospital because of her mental health, and Christine helps her through it. My favourite part is when they perform in the talent show. The artwork is really nice - it begins in colour, but when Moon and Christine meet, the rest of the book is black and white. I recommend Stargazing to 7-9 year olds. 4 out of 5 stars! - Finley, 7

The Boy, the Bird & the Coffin Maker

By Anuska Allepuz, Matilda Woods

In the store

The lives of the coffin maker and the boy are very sad until they find each other. My favourite part of the book was when the Mayor ordered his coffin with really weird measurements that he would not fit into! The parts about death were difficult to read but I think that kids in grades 5-7 who like serious books would like this one. 4.5 stars out of 5!

A fourth grade talent show has everybody talking. All the other kids have a group except Olive and now she has to figure out how she can participate. She tries many different activities and in the end she finds one perfect, unusual act just for her. I wish this book was longer so that I could find out if Olive used her talents as a grown up! 4.5 out of 5 stars! - Lily, 9.

The 78-Story Treehouse: Moo-vie Madness!

By Terry Denton, Andy Griffiths

In the store

Andy and Terry live in a 78-story treehouse. Although they mostly get along, one day the boys have a fight and I was very curious to see if they would make up. I loved that each page of the book had part of a spy movie cow on it. I would rate this book 4 stars out of 5 and would recommend it to fans of Diary of a Wimpy kid! - Samantha, 10.

The 1,000-year-old Boy

A long time ago, in the Viking era, a kid named Alve lived with his family by the river. When people attack his family, they are forced to run away. With the help of a mysterious object, Alve and his family become ageless, moving to different places throughout history.

Alve must track down the object to reverse the spell - a great adventure!

I think this book is best for 10 to 13-year-olds who like history and fantasy. I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars because the ending is happy but strange. There is some cussing, and a little bit of violence, but not much. My favourite part was when Alve talked about his friend from the 1960s, because I liked learning about things from the 60s.
