Kiko Himura is a half Japanese American teenager who has a terrible relationship with her blond haired, blue-eyed American mom. Kiko feels like no matter what she does, her mom is disappointed in her.
Art is Kiko’s escape and getting into a special art school in New York becomes her most important goal. This will give Kiko the chance to find happiness without her mom’s constant negativity. When she doesn’t get into art school, Kiko is devastated. In her time of sadness, Kiko’s childhood friend Freddy, returns to her town. Old feelings and memories start resurface.
Freddy offers Kiko the chance for her to come with him to California, and she jumps at the opportunity. This trip will change Kiko’s life forever, as she comes to understand who she is and what she is capable of.
This is a great book about finding yourself. I would recommend Starfish to anyone over the age of 12.
