Superstar, written by Mandy Davis, is about a boy named Lester Musselbaum who’s in grade five and gets bullied at school. Lester loves flying and wants to become an astronaut by following in his dad’s footsteps, but his mother is against this because that’s how Lester’s father died.
My favourite part of Superstar was when Lester kicked the ball back to Ricky in a perfect arc, and Michael Z congratulates him. I liked this part because Lester had finally found something that he was good at, and Michael (who made fun of Lester), also liked it, making it his ‘thing’.
Readers aged 10-13 who enjoy books about making friends and not fitting in would enjoy reading Superstar because it is all about a boy not fitting in because he is different from the other children at school. Some of the vocabulary is difficult, which might make this book challenging for children under the age of ten.
I would give this book four and a half stars out of five because it has a good storyline and a good moral.
