Kasey & Ivy

By Alison Hughes

In the store

Kasey goes into the hospital because she has bone disease. Although she is very sick, she has a great attitude about her illness. The book is written through letters between Kasey and a friend who is at home while she is away. It is a story is of loss but it is also about strength and has a very hopeful message. My favourite part was when an older patient who has memory loss barged into her room looking for his lost kitty and Kasey gave him one of her stuffed kitties. I would rate this book 4.5 stars out of 5 and I think that kids aged 8-13 who like funny, creative stories will enjoy this book. - Revlyn, 11.

Shai & Emmie Star in Dancy Pants!

By Sharee Miller, Nancy Ohlin, Quvenzhané Wallis

In the store

Shai, Emmie and Rio are in grade 3m and love to dance! They are headed to a big stadium to perform a tap dance in front of judges and want to dance better than their enemy, Gabby. I really liked how competitive the kids were against each other and wish that this book was a little longer and included more time after the competition was done. I would rate this book 5 stars out of 5 and think people aged 6 to 11 who like dance would like it! - Mya, 8

The Land of Yesterday

By K. A. Reynolds

In the store

Cecilia's brother, Celadon, has passed away and gone to The Land of Yesterday. When her mother follows Celadon to this mysterious world, Cecilia must try to get her back. Her travels take her to many dangerous and scary places, including the Planet of Nightmares. My favourite part of the book was when Cecilia met the gnomes because they couldn’t talk and she had to guess what they were saying. Parts of the story are very sad but ultimately I liked the book's message: fight for what you believe in. I would rate this book 5 stars out of 5 and think that kids aged 11 to 14 who like adventure would enjoy this book.

Roxie and the Hooligans at Buzzard's Roost

By Alexandra Boiger, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

In the store

Uncle Dangerfoot and his niece Roxie are on vacation when a mystery pops up and they wind up having to rescue someone! My favourite character is Smokey Joe because he has a sense of humour and is always getting in trouble. I wouldn’t change anything about this book and would rate it 5 stars out of 5. I think that kids aged 8-10 who like mysteries and laughing would enjoy Roxie's adventures! - Ryerson, age 9

Cyclone

Cyclone by Maureen Cronin is a wonderful book. In this touching story we meet middle grade Nora who finds herself suffering grief and self-blame after blackmailing her cousin into riding “the Cyclone,” the world famous Coney Island roller coaster. It all goes horribly wrong when the the ride causes her cousin Riley to collapse mere steps from the coaster before falling into a coma.

The pressure grows when Nora becomes suspicious of an unknown man who has been calling Riley. Nora and her family have a lot to deal with. I would recommend this book for those aged ten and up. I rate this book 4½ out of 5 stars because it pulls you in and keeps you hooked with many cliffhangers. The author does an especially great job of describing the characters' experiences in the hospital. This book was very difficult to put down!
