Saving Montgomery Sole, by Mariko Tamaki is a fantastic story about a girl named Monty who is trying to figure out where she fits into the world. Monty lives with her two moms and a sister. She also has a friend who is gay. The book explores issues of friendship, family and prejudice. Monty goes to a high school where things are not always easy. School would be unbearable if she didn't have her friends from the Mystery Club with her.
Monty finds an amulet that she suspects might hold magical powers. She wonders if it could help her predict the future or fight against the people who are mean and make fun of her friend Thomas for being gay. My favourite part of this book is Monty's character. She is strong, smart, and perseveres through anything that comes her way. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a little bit of a mystery, some adventure, and a story about people who try to help others, and in the process, figure out something that they didn't know before.
