The packaging that recipes come in these days is a far cry from the beloved The Joy of Cooking or Fannie Farmer. From the playful and inspired musings of chefs to practical applications that get everyone at the table eating, here are a few neat ones.
The Flexitarian Table is a beautiful, well-laid-out cookbook that is divided by the seasons and hopes to cater to vegetarians, meat lovers, and those that hover somewhere in between. I have always loved cookbooks that allow for substitution of proteins because they allow for greater sensitivity and flexibility for all. Check out this menu:
Spring Menu # 3
Crispy Pressed Chicken/Tofu with Garlic Mint
Creamy Risotto-Style Brown Rice with Spring Greens and Asiago
Shaved Spring Vegetable and Apple Salad
In the past there have been cookbooks on "the burger" or ones specifically for "soups and stews." Quinoa 365, a hot new seller, is built around the superfood quinoa. Quinoa is extremely nutrituous, quick to make, and versatile as can be. Flavour-filled recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desert make up this book. The only downside is the fallout from quinoa's great popularity: growers of quinoa, a staple of great benefit, can no longer afford to purchase the seed themselves. But that is another story.
My Last Supper: 50 Great Chefs and Their Final Meals is an undeniably cool book. Throughout are photos, creative text placement, and the distilled loves of those that have dedicated their lives to making magic out of food. See Lida Bastianich's profile, for example:
What would be your last meal on earth ?
My last meal would consist of a plate of sliced San Daniele prosciutto with some ripe black figs, liniguini in white clam sauce; a plate of Grana Padano; and perfectly ripe, juicy peaches.
What would be the setting for the meal ?
The setting would be in my house overlooking the Adriatic, while the waves cracked against the rocky shore.
What would you drink with your meal ?
I would have plenty of Bastianich wines....
Would there be music ?
Scheherazade would be playing in surround sound.
Who would be your dining companions ?
I would like my family and closest friends with me.
Who would prepare the meal ?
I would cook with the assistance of my mother and chldren as we always do at home.
