What is "Original Cin", you ask? As the website says, "Career critics continuing the conversation in a post-print world."
Who are these critics, you ask? One quick visit to their site will introduce you to them, but I will tell you that it was started by former Toronto Sun reviewer Jim Slotek (not that I read his writing in that publication - sorry Jim) but after discovering his writing online, I'm glad he started this site. Globe and Mail readers will surely recognize Liam Lacey and Sunday Secret Cinema members will recognize our guest speaker, Thom Ernst and the host of our first Sunday series, Karen Gordon.
And this Shout Out, why now? First, why not. But then, I've always enjoyed talking about films with Karen Gordon and have appreciated her reviews. I remembered that Karen gave quite positive - even glowing raves! - to two of this week's films, and thought why not share Karen's reviews with some of her many fans in Guelph.
Finally, as we reopen the cinema after a lengthy pandemic pause, it is with our weekly film program promoted at www.bookshelf.ca and on our social media platforms, not the printed calendars of the past 30 years. So as we move forward into a post-print world of advertising our cinema program online, it just felt right to acknowledge the work of some other film lovers who stepped away from the paper pages but not from writing about the movies.
So, thanks to Karen for her great reviews of Roadrunner: A Film about Anthony Bourdain and Marie Chapdelaine. I miss her reviews on CBC radio and our trading of notes while waiting in lines at TIFF, but I'm glad to share her great work published on Original Cin.
